Career Break Travel: Budapest

We arrived in Budapest with a craving for Asian food (mostly WJ), so we didn’t manage to try most of the Hungarian dishes. We had subpar Thai food, mediocre Chinese food, but hit the spot with a great Indian place.

The main thing that struck us about Budapest was how photogenic it was. The buildings were all so beautiful and had such incredible detail. We spent most of our time exploring them on foot.

Hungary was our next stop after Slovakia, and the fifth country out of 10 that we visited on our 3-month long career break trip.

Days spent here

5 days in Hungary, all in Budapest

Highlights

  • The beautiful architecture – St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Hungarian Parliament Building, Fisherman’s Bastion, need I say more?
  • Soaking ourselves in Gellért Spa – We had a relaxing day trying out the different pools in the spa. Although it’s one of the more popular baths in Budapest for tourists, the crowd was not too bad and we had plenty of space!

We didn’t dare to take a dip in the freezing 18°C and 21°C pools though!

Vajdahunyad Castle
  • Strolling around St. Margaret’s Island – It seems like the go-to place for locals on the weekends. There was lots of music, different bike rentals and lots of ice-cream!

Lowlight

  •  The insane number of people at Széchenyi Thermal Baths – There was barely enough space to fit into any of the pools. It might be the most famous bath in Budapest, but the insane crowd made it stressful rather than relaxing.

Where we stayed

Our Airbnb turned out to one of the Yellow Star Houses where Jews were housed during the Holocaust. A memorial wall that marked the boundary of the VII District ghetto during WWII was also literally in the backyard.

Off we went to Zagreb, the first city we visited in Croatia. And you guessed it right – it was on a Flixbus!
