Career Break Travel: Prague, Cesky Krumlov & Kutna Hora

Hello, land of charming architecture and cheap beer!

People always comment that Prague looks straight from a fairytale. But I think Cesky Krumlov looks more like one than Prague!

Czech Republic was our next stop after Germany, and the second country out of 10 that we visited on our 3-month long career break trip.

Days spent in the Czech Republic

7 days, with 1 day in Kutna Hora on a day trip and 2 nights spent in Cesky Krumlov

Highlights

High jump competition in Prague
  • Catching a high jump competition – Right after we arrived, there was a competition between the locals and Americans going on in the old town. The buzzing atmosphere really set the mood for our trip in Czech Republic!
  • Seeing human bones in a different light – Instead of being eerie or just a reminder of death, they’re made into something beautiful at Sedlec Ossuary, also aptly known as the Bone Church. No wonder there was a long queue to get into the tiny chapel!
  • The beautiful Cesky Krumlov – We fell in love with the town with its colourful buildings and serene surroundings. Especially early in the morning when the day trippers haven’t arrived and the late evenings when they’ve gone off, the old town is so quiet and peaceful.

We also came across a tiny cafe in the Monastery garden where families gathered or just sprawled on the grass with their kiddos running around. They even had a slackline which we both tried our hand feet at and failed badly.

So glad we didn’t follow most sites’ advice to just do a day trip there because it was all the more relaxing!

Lowlight

  • The insane crowds – Prague gets pretty crowded in the summer, especially on the bridge!

Fun mentions

  • After falling off the slackline at the very family-friendly place, I accidentally flashed my undies at the poor kids nearby!

Note to self: Do not wear a minidress when slacklining!

  • I ordered, or thought I ordered, potato pancakes with broccoli. The waitress took my order with a puzzled look, and came out a while later to set down a plate of steamed broccoli with nothing else in front of me. She must have thought I was on a diet?

And yes, I cleared my plate.

Where we stayed

In Cesky Krumlov, we stayed at an Airbnb right above Jelenka restaurant a stone’s throw from the castle. Pretty interesting because we had the run of the place when it was closed for the night!

Because we split our stay in Prague, we booked two different places. One was at a tiny Airbnb which was quite confusing to find when we first arrived. Another was at Alveo Suites with a spacious room and a fully stocked kitchen which we made full use of it!

How much we spent in the Czech Republic

ItemExpenditure
Accommodation$368.92
Food$234.13
Transport$110.95
Attractions$31.75
Miscellaneous$28.90
Total$774.64

We spent a total of S$774.64 for the both of us.

Transport costs include the journey from Munich to Prague.

Where we went next

We took another Flixbus from Prague, this time to the pretty town of Wroclaw in Poland.

And on this journey, I managed to flash myself at the strong lady who wrenched open the (spoilt) toilet door while I was peeing (a lot of accidental flashing on this trip). I still hope nobody else saw anything!
