The trip to Haikou was quite a random one. I wanted to surprise WJ with a (very belated) birthday trip, and the nearer countries were all in the midst of their rainy seasons. So I looked a little further and found Haikou, a 3.5 hour flight away. It has supposedly clear weather in November, albeit a little chilly.

Hotel Review: Grand Mercure Dongguan Humen
Grand Mercure Dongguan Humen is near everything - food, shopping and parks. I've stayed here over 15 times, all for work trips. It's quite spacious with all the amenities you need. The only thing I have to complain about the room is their pillows. They're too soft! I always get a neck and shoulder ache when I sleep here.

What do you call bicycles as private transport? I'm calling it taxi biking because I have no idea. Anyway, is it legal in Dongguan? I'm not sure. There were a few incidents where the drivers have asked me to get down early because they didn't want to ride past the police station and gave a vague reply when I asked why!

You can take a bus too, but I’ve found the ferry to be more comfortable and not so tedious (especially if you have check-in luggage)! Hong Kong Airport to Dongguan Humen 1. Buy ferry tickets inside Hong Kong Airport Don’t clear immigration! The counters to buy the ferry tickets are right opposite the immigration counters.
