Homerun Baseball in Singapore: 3 Strikes and you’re Out!

My sister and I had a baseball set for kids when we were younger. We never quite managed to hit the ball with the bat though.

And we were going to see how much we’d improved over the years at Homerun Baseball.

After an extremely long journey to the West, the 4 of us reached the building. It’s a room with a very high ceiling and… No aircon. Alamak! The weather was humid as it was about to rain and we’d arrived drenched in sweat. The few fans on the walls barely made a difference unless you were sitting down and not moving.

The system reminded me of an arcade – buy tokens, put tokens into the machine, push button, play game.

We bought $50 worth of tokens, which entitled one of us to a 1-year membership and 16 tokens. Add that to 5 free tokens on WJ’s birthday month and we had 38 tokens to split among us.

First up, we tried our hand at batting.

I was terrible. I hit a total of 1 ball on my first attempt. The others fared slightly better.

After our first round, one of the guys running Homerun Baseball told us the way we were holding the baseball bats and our stance were completely wrong. Turns out you have to stand sideways and grip the bat with both hands one right above the other. I managed to hit a couple of balls on my second try!

We only played at the ‘beginners’ area with bigger balls and the slowest speed of 80km/h. They have 3 other areas with higher speeds and the normal-sized balls. The speed goes up to an astounding 120km/h! Seeing as I could barely gauge where the slowest ball was heading, I thought it’d be best if I skipped that!

I preferred the pitching area. It’s like the night market games in Taiwan where you throw the ball at numbers, just that you don’t get to win a prize here. You’ll only get a results slip.

The machine told you which number to hit and if you manage to hit the right number, you get higher points. If you hit another number, you still get 1 point. If you miss completely, remember that it’s an open area and everyone can see you.

I managed to get an all-time high score of… 15 points. It’s out of 100 points but let’s just focus on small victories.

Because it’s so extremely out of the way for me, I doubt I’d go back again unless I’m in the vicinity. But if you’re looking to practice your baseball skills in Singapore, Homerun Baseball is a good place to try! Just remember to bring a towel to wipe off all that sweat!

And here I leave you with WJ showing you how to pitch (very non-professionally).
