Island Hopping in Krabi and the Most Painful Raindrops Ever!

Krabi is a great spot to leap off to explore more islands. We joined a 4-island island hopping tour by Chok PaiSan Andaman Speedboat which included 2 snorkelling stops while we were there.

First up was Phra Nang beach with phallic sculptures abound.

Then we went on to Koh Poda, also known as Turtle Island.

Next up was Koh Kai, or Chicken Island named because the silhouette of the island resembles that of a chicken.

We were walking to Koh Tub from Koh Mor in knee-deep water when it started drizzling. Koh Mor and Koh Tub are two islands separated by a sandbank which is covered by water during high tide. We were quickly crossing the sandbank as the tide was rising.

And then it rained.

It rained torrentially. I’d never been in the middle of such a heavy downpour before and I hope never to be in one again! We raced back to the speedboat as every guide frantically called out to all the tourists in the water to hurry.

All of us grabbed any handles available on the speedboat as the thick droplets whipped out faces. My hair was all over my face but I still spotted a lady sitting opposite us saying her prayers, which was definitely not a good omen! All our bags were chucked into the small cabins to protect them from the rain, but the floor of the boat was already filling with water fast. Some bags probably got very wet. But the dry ones never made it back dry anyway.

We waited onboard as the speedboat made its first stop at a resort on Phi Phi Island. The poor elderly couple had to cross the long rocking bridge on the water to get to the island. A lady from the resort was waiting to escort them midway on the bridge with an umbrella, but she was probably already drenched neck down. The man also had a DSLR in his non-waterproof bag. RIP, poor camera.

When we hit the shores of Ao Nang beach, we sprinted towards the closest shelter. The raindrops were like bullets! Combined with the sand, it felt like they were biting our legs as we ran!

We cowered under the shelter until the rain slowed to a drizzle. Then we made our way back to our hotel shivering but laughing at our adventure. That was really an experience!
