Vy’s Market Restaurant: Cooking Up a Storm

WJ and I wanted to go for a cooking class in Hoi An, and what better place to learn at than at Miss Vy’s? She’s the owner of many famous restaurants in Hoi An and we’ve tried a few of them and liked what we ate!

So what did we learn from the Taste Vietnam Street Food Tour, Tastings & Lunch at Vy’s Market Restaurant?

We learnt to cook Hoi An crispy pancakes and rice paper rolls, and learnt to prepare Cao Lau and jackfruit salad. But that wasn’t all! We also got to try plenty of local street food.

Chopping the noodles for the Cao Lau was more difficult than expected. While the staff chopped all pieces to precise widths, my turn saw the noodles turn to broken pieces. I think I wasted quite a bit of noodles trying!

We also got to try our hand at making Bahn Mi. It’s not as simple as it looks! The dough is slightly springy and reminiscent of PlayDoh.

In between our cooking attempts, we also got to try the local street grub. Too bad I don’t have photos though, as my camera died halfway. There was a booth named ‘Weird Wonderful Food’ and boy, were there some weird food!

There were the duck egg embryos, pigs’ brains and ears and silkworm salads to name a few. The only one I tried? Jellyfish salad. Don’t judge; I’m a wuss.

We didn’t just get to eat the ‘weird’ food though. There were plenty of other varieties that we tried! There was the pork skewers, the beef rolls, Bahn Mi, some crispy crackers and lots of herbs. We also drank refreshing drinks like a mixed ginger drink and two others in between all the eating.

We went for the 11am class and before it even ended, we were stuffed! There was simply too much food going into our mouths!
